Master thatcher in South Devon

I thatch across South Devon, and my core area is the South Hams and South Dartmoor. I also work from time to time in Scotland, where I grew up. I offer a friendly, professional service, and thatch to the very highest standards in the craft. I am a member of the Devon & Cornwall Master Thatchers’ Association.

I work on buildings of all types, from newbuilds to historic farmhouses and longhouses. I have worked for a range of private clients, and also The National Trust for Scotland.

Alongside my thatching work, I am a writer and the author of the acclaimed book On the Roof: A Thatcher’s Journey. I also lecture on thatching at the Architectural Association in London.

Tradition and craft

I am lucky to do a job that I love. I believe my passion for the craft comes through in my work, and I find great satisfaction in using my skills to create roofs that are beautiful as well as functional.

A complete thatching service

Repairs
£0.00

Repairs and maintenance are a vital part of the thatching process. I offer honest and clear advice on what your roof needs to keep it looking and performing at its best. Patching, cleaning and ‘filling’ with cut lengths of new reed can all significantly extend the lifespan of your thatch.

Ridging
£149.00

Thatched roofs need to be re-ridged once, twice or more during the lifetime of the thatch. I offer flush, block, and ornamental ridges, depending on the roof, its particular requirements, and the look desired by the homeowner.

Rethatch
£199.00

I offer thatching in both water reed and combed wheat. I work on all types of roofs from tiny summerhouses to historic longhouses and large newbuilds. I take pride in my work and always use the best materials available.

Testimonials

  • ‘Tom has rethatched our Grade II listed round house, using local water reed from the RSPB Tay Reed beds and liaising with Historic Environment Scotland throughout the process, he has completed a most wonderful rethatch which really is a work of art. Sharing his knowledge with HES professionals helped all of us agree on a ridge design to suit the style of the house. It has been a brilliant experience for us and all our neighbours, his friendly, open and professional manner has won him a lot of new friends in this part of Scotland. We would recommend Tom to anyone seeking a professional rethatch or repair.’

  • ‘We are so proud of our new roof; it has certainly been tested by the weather this year. We gave Tom a free hand designing the ridge, which draws lots of compliments. It was wonderful to experience the whole transformation and witness the work and skill involved. Our property was left respectfully tidy at the end of each day and the neighbours enjoyed the whole process too.’

    — Jean and Alan Betts, Holbeton, 2026

  • 'Tom replaced the ridge on our historic thatched cottage, and it was a great experience. Communication was clear all the way through, and Tom spoke with visitors to the site whilst working, making the experience a highlight for many. The final job was completed on time and looks fantastic; we still get comments about the thatch work today! The work was featured on Landward showcasing Tom's skill, and we were thrilled to be able to host him and the TV crew.’

    — Debbie Reid, National Trust for Scotland, Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Cottage & Museum, Cromarty, 2025

  • ‘Tom replaced the thatched ridge of our cottage, completing the work with the added charm of his unique finials. Not only is the thatch beautiful but the clearing up afterwards was done with thought and attention to detail. The thatched roof enhances this lovely cottage perfectly.’
